Calcium-rich sprouted organic almonds are a good food choice for your bones.

Adding sesame and hemp seeds with Plantation blackstrap molasses make this a bone-loving snack.

A version of this recipe was served at my event:

The Whole Body Approach to Osteoporosis with Keith McCormick, DC.

It was met with a "yum" and an "ah" and......

"Can I please have that recipe?"

Vitamin D: It's not just about Osteoporosis and Bone Health

There are numerous reasons why I chose the title, The Whole-Body Approach to Osteoporosis, for my book. Not only should we look at the whole body when searching for causes of bone loss, but the fact that there are so many pieces of the "bone puzzle" that fit into other parts of the body, we really can't separate skeletal physiology from the other organs and tissues during the diagnostic process.

Take vitamin D for instance. We all know that vitamin D is important for bones because it helps us absorb more calcium from the gut. But did you know that vitamin D is also important for the immune system to effectively ward off disease?

And, it does so much more!

When I was diagnosed with osteopenia in 2005 after my first DXA report,  I knew I wasn't interested in the script my doctor handed me. It was packaged with a ton of fear… “if you don’t take the meds your life is doomed.”   Instead I approached my diagnosis with the first-step solution: food as my medicine.

That moment catapulted me into the marrow of my own bones. It forced me to look into the inner workings of my life and make changes. I left my Wall Street career, brought a close to my 20-year marriage, and moved out of NYC after 37 years. Most importantly I became mindful of my life choices.

I returned to school to study "food as medicine" at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition®, studied with the best teachers, and traveled to the far corners of the world to explore how bone health is treated in places such as Bali, Indonesia and Chiang Mai, Thailand.

My life's focus shifted to organic nutrient-dense food, mindful living, movement, joy, laughter and my work as a Holistic Bone Coach.

How are my bones now?

I love my bones and I love finding new ways to feed my bones.

My bones were jumping for joy having found The Healthy Bones Nutrition Plan and Cookbook - Medicine Through Food Guide by Dr. Laura Kelly and Helen Bryman Kelly.  Inside the book offers a recipe for Bone-Building Calcium-Rich Vinegar.

"Just one tablespoon of Bone-Building Vinegar equals 350-400 mg of calcium (1,000-1,200 recommended for menopausal and post menopausal women)".[1]

Brusells Sprouts are a cruciferous vegetable. These veggies were originally named for the way their flowers seemed to form a cross or crucifix shape. But they are also known as “brassica” vegetables. That comes from their botanical name which translates to “cabbage.” Some people just call them the cabbage family of vegetables.

Eating three servings a day of cruciferous veggies is my personal goal.

Here’s a list of the most common ones you’ll find:

Who knew the bone-loving qualities of cashews?

From Dr. Mercola:

"Cashews are the number one crop in the world (after almonds), cultivated in more than 30 countries. They require a hot, humid climate to proliferate, which is why India, Brazil, Mozambique, Tanzania, and Nigeria are the largest raw cashew producers. (more…)

Every day I talk to people who are trying to cut back on salt. They want to try to reduce their blood pressure and cut heart disease risk.

But when it comes to your bones do you have to follow a low-salt diet? (more…)

Can Pomegranates Hasten Bone Loss?

My Skelly really likes summer fruits like blueberries and watermelon. But come winter there’s a fruit she loves even more. I’m talking about pomegranates. These are one of the oldest known fruits in the world. In ancient Egypt they were buried in the tombs of royalty.

And I love pomegranates for what they do for my Skelly…
