The best breakfast cereal for your bones

Mighty Bone Loving Oatmeal packs a delicious nutrient boost. Oats are high in the form of soluble fiber called beta-glucan, which is beneficial for heart health. They are a good source of manganese, a component of antioxidant enzymes, important in facilitating bone development and helping to make and break down glucose. Oats are also a good source of calcium, iron, magnesium, zinc, and selenium.

Adding Berries

My bones feel nourished eating my, cook-once-eat-twice (or 3-4 times), mighty bone-loving oatmeal especially as the weather gets colder. Since I find it so soothing I usually eat oatmeal all year round. Adding berries rounds out this pleasurable meal with a touch of sweetness.

Skelly and I love to quench our thirst.  Instead of reaching for filtered water, we drink one 750mg bottle of Gerolsteiner Mineral Water.  Not only for the bioavailability of calcium and magnesium but because mineral water offsets a highly-acidic Western diet characterized by high grains and animal products. Drinking 1,500-2,000 mL of mineral water rich in bicarbonate (>1.8 g/L) can help reduce the net dietary acid load. [1]

Personally, I am a mostly grain-free animal protein eater. Animal protein keeps me grounded. Otherwise, I float away and my brain does not function in a sharp way. Not everyone eats this way as we are all individuals with different dietary needs. Vegetarians typically eat more grains which are more acidic.

When it comes to bones, I’m all about feeding my Skelly bone-building foods.

It’s always the first step in my bone health program.

You see, you can’t just pop a pill and keep poisoning your bones with bad food. But I do think that supplements can play an important role in boosting the nutrients that your bones need.

Maybe you don’t digest your food very well so you aren’t getting the nutrients your bones need. Or maybe you’re trying to eat right, but you’re not hitting your goals at every meal. I get that…

Now, I’m no expert on supplements. But I thought I’d share with you today the four supplements that I take to make sure my bones are getting the most important vitamins and minerals they need.

And before I get started, I’ll mention the one “bone” supplement that I DON’T take.

Nothing I like more than a handful of crunchy nuts for a snack. And Skelly’s with me on this.

You see, nuts are full of healthy fats, protein, and fiber that fill you up. But they are also a treasure box of minerals that build strong bones.

Maybe you have a favorite nut that you keep on hand. But I want you to think about rotating your nuts or eating lots of mixed nuts. That’s because each type of nut offers something special for your bones. If you stick to just one you’re missing out.

Here are the nuts I like best and what they do for your bones:

In my bad old Wall Street days – before Skelly and I were such good friends – my idea of breakfast was a cigarette and a cup of coffee. As my Skelly likes to say, “We’ve come a long way, Baby!”

These days I take breakfast seriously. In a minute I’ll tell you about my favorite go-to morning food ritual.

Like me, chances are you grew up eating a ton of cold breakfast cereals like Frosted Flakes, Kix, and Rice Krispies. Maybe over the years you graduated to Special K, Fiber One, or even Kashi Go Lean.

Clients often ask me which breakfast cereal is best for your bones. My answer is always the same:

none of the above.

Eating chocolate is almost a spiritual experience for me.  I turn it into a meditation.  I sit down.  I close my eyes. I place one square of dark chocolate on my tongue.  I don’t chew.  I just let the chocolate take its own good time to melt into my body.  I taste the bitterness and the sweetness.

But I really love chocolate because it's so good to my bones.
